Pilot's Path

PPL pathway, discovery flights, careers, scholarships, organizations — from zero to first solo.

Think of this poster as your map. You don’t need to decide to become a pilot — just follow the pins.

1. First taste (free / cheap)

  • Discovery flight (~30–45 min with a CFI at a local field like KCEF / KBAF — placeholder). You handle the controls in cruise.
  • Chair-flying: sit, touch-poster, say checklists out loud. Sounds silly, works brilliantly.
  • Sim first: do Mission 1 in Flight Sim before you pay for Hobbs time.

2. Private Pilot License (PPL) in plain English

  1. Medical (BasicMed / 3rd class) + student pilot certificate
  2. ~40 hrs min (most do 60–70): ground school + flight lessons
  3. Written exam → checkride → license

Rough costs (Northeast placeholder): $12k–$17k total. Club tip: fly consistently 2×/week, chair-fly between lessons, and apply early for scholarships.

3. Careers to explore

Pilots, flight dispatch, ATC, A&P maintenance, aerospace engineering, aviation medicine, and aviation law all offer different ways to be part of aviation.

4. Scholarships & orgs

  • EAA Young Eagles, AOPA, Women in Aviation, OBAP, Latino Pilots Assoc.
  • Local EAA chapter rides + FAA WINGS seminars.
  • Full link list lives in Resources.

Next step: come Thursday, try the sim, and check the home page for contact details when they are available.
